Immigrants Support Germany’s Workforce Amid Labor Shortages
Their presence is particularly significant in several occupations struggling to attract sufficient workers. They represent 56% of cooks and 55% of employees in food manufacturing, making these professions among the sectors with the highest shares of migrant-background workers.
More than half of the workforce in floor installation, scaffolding and meat processing also comes from this population, accounting for 54%, 51% and 51%, respectively.
The proportion reaches 47% among bus and tram operators, as well as employees in food services.
In nursing professions, approximately one-third of workers have a migration background. Their representation also stands at 44% in plastics production and 41% in freight transportation.
However, their participation varies considerably across other occupations. Among sectors experiencing labor shortages, emergency rescue services record the lowest share at 7%, followed by meat retail workers at 13% and agricultural employees at 15%.
Workers with migration backgrounds are also less represented in certain professions outside shortage-hit sectors, making up 8% of police personnel and 9% of employees in both public administration and the judiciary.
Germany’s Federal Statistical Office, known as Destatis, noted that the integration of migrants into the labor market differs according to their country or region of origin and how long they have lived in Germany.
